About the Zimbabwean Dollar
The RTGS Dollar, later renamed the Zimbabwean Dollar (ZWL), was reintroduced in 2019 to replace the multicurrency system. It suffered severe depreciation and was eventually replaced by the Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG) in April 2024.
The name 'Zimbabwean Dollar' reflects the country and its currency history.

A Victim of Hyperinflation
The Zimbabwean Dollar (ZWL) is perhaps best known for experiencing one of the worst cases of hyperinflation in modern history, leading to banknotes with denominations of trillions of dollars.
Multiple Redenominations
Due to persistent economic challenges, the Zimbabwean Dollar underwent multiple redenominations, with zeros being removed several times to make the currency more manageable.
Replaced by Gold-Backed ZiG
In April 2024, the Zimbabwean Dollar (ZWL) was replaced by a new gold-backed currency, the Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG), in an attempt to restore confidence and stability.
