The current Mauritanian Ouguiya (MRU) was introduced in 2018, replacing the old Ouguiya (MRO) at a rate of 10:1. This redenomination was aimed at strengthening the national currency and combating counterfeiting.
The name 'Ouguiya' is a local term for 'ounce'.

The Mauritanian Ouguiya is one of only two currencies in the world (the other being the Malagasy Ariary) that is not decimalized. One Ouguiya equals five Khoums.

Mauritania's economy is largely driven by its vast iron ore reserves, which are a major export and influence the value of the Ouguiya.
Redenomination of 2018
The 2018 redenomination saw a new series of coins and banknotes, effectively removing a zero from the currency's value (1 MRU = 10 MRO).
